Ad-Aware 10: Improved Perfomance With New Look!

If you can recall, Lavasoft Ad-Aware was once arguably the best antispyware program some time ago. Following the pace to tap into field of antivirus, I had always wanted to write about Ad-Aware 9 and even did some test, but I simply forgot about it; and now the version 10 has come. This time I will write without any excuse!

Downloaded the 6MB installation file, it then takes more time than expected to further download necessary files and definitions.

Similar to UnThreat, Ad-Aware uses Sunbelt Vipre and Lavasoft own scanning engine. This new version 10 further strengthens its detection engine, improves heuristics detection and additional malware sandbox emulator to analyse unknown files in virtual. However, my gaze is drawn to the totally new user interface which is definitely worth to be given a round of applause.

Note that this program will be automatically unlocked for 30-days trial professional edition. Thus I manually disable all advanced protection leaving only the basic one with real-time antivirus and antispyware protection. Putting new look aside, I got some malware samples to be tested. At first I thought Ad-Aware is not working, only then I come to realise that no notification will appear when threat is blocked, until the setting is set to "Prompt".

One obvious thing I noticed during test is that Ad-Aware 10 takes an average of 40MB memory, but really little CPU usage  during scanning which causes no lags at all unlike other vendors. And it scored a pretty detection rate of 81.5%. For such effective and good looking product with no cost, what do you expect more?
