Avira: The Free Antivirus You Can Trust!

By now, we should all know that antivirus is indispensable for all computer especially Windows. In the field of security product, there is a clear-cut between free and paid version; but in fact many free ones in this list of alternatives actually perform better than paid, hands down. Frankly, companies nowadays doesn't focus only on detection rate, but also user interface where many has stripped off the traditional look, and now resemble a fancy gaming mode.

Avira from German has been in the industry since 1988, and still going strong ahead maintaining a rather tradidional interface(which is good). The free version, Avira Free Antivirus 12 is one of the most downloaded product, and has claimed numerous awards from independent tests like AV-Comparatives. Common features includes real-time protection, web blocker, behaviour blocker, autorun and host protection and more. Needless to say, it can protect against all kinds of virus and malware.

The Bad
Putting aside the high effectiveness in blocking malware, many still prefer other solutions due to limitation of only one update per day, plus a pop-up advertisement upon every successful update. Adding, a toolbar must be installed to use the web blocker.

The Good
If not automatically quarantined, most antivirus alerts user to choose an action when a virus is detected, either remove or ignore; When user accidentally ignores, the malware is free to run. However with Avira, the malware will be blocked until it is put into exclusion list. If you were to ask me which antivirus to use, Avira it is. With high detection rate, fast engine and small memory footprint, the downsides are negligible.
